Family as Motivators Training Manual was developed and revised by Dr. Gregory S. Chasson, Jenna Ewing, Ashley A. Carpenter and Brittany Gibby out of Towson University.  

Laura Jo Acuna Zavalney, LCSW-S is a professional mental health provider who specializes in hoarding disorder and related disorders.

The program consists of three modules:
  1. Education on the psychology of hoarding disorder
  2. Concepts and Practices of Family Accommodation
  3. Concept and Practices of Harm Reduction

Duration: Each Session run time is 1 hour.

Description:  Participants will hear about the prevalence of hoarding disorder,
the course of hoarding disorder, some common characteristics seen in individuals who hoard, and thoughts on how and/or why hoarding may start.


Session Two:

Description: Family members receive an overview of family accommodation, discuss the family member’s role in accommodation, and discuss the consequences associated with family accommodation.

Session Three:

Description: Review homework from Session two and then discuss various ways to manage hoarding without family accommodation and begin to develop a behavioral contract to decrease or eliminate family accommodation.

Session Four:

Description: An introduction to Motivational Interviewing, a therapeutic approach to promote change. Participants will learn more about the stages of change, identify their loved one’s place on the “change wheel”, lastly they will become aware of the importance of empathy and start practicing it outside of session.

Session Five:

Description: The objective of this session is to begin a discussion of appropriate listening skills, which involves 1) active listening, 2) asking appropriate questions and 3) affirming your lived one. Exercises give participants opportunities to practice these skills. We focus heavily on listening skills. Homework is given for next session.

Session Six:

Description: The objective of this session is to discuss how both the participant’s lives and their loved one’s lives are affected by hoarding. The participant should be able to articulate how those with hoarding are often conflicted between their values and their hoarding behaviors. This session also aims to introduce the concept of change talk, and the participant should feel comfortable recognizing change talk and working to elicit it from their loved ones.

Session Seven:

Description: The objective of this session is to educate the participant about the concept of resistance. The participant should be able to discuss specific examples of resistance they have encountered with their loved one. The participant should also feel prepared to respond to additional or continued resistance from their loved one. Additionally, the participant should demonstrate practical reflective listening skills and feel confident to be able to implement these skills with their loved one.

Session Eight:

Description: The objectives of this session include having the participants understand the history, application, and principles of harm reduction, so that the participant is able to set the stage for a harm reduction strategy, Participants will also learn how to successfully implement a harm reduction plan, as well as learn how to let go, understand, forgive, and grab hold (Keep the Love, Shed the Clutter)

Session Nine:

Description: The objectives of this session include having the participants understand the concept of harm potential, understand guidelines on conducting a home assessment, and evaluate his or her loved one’s own harm potential. Handouts will help identify major harm reduction targets to be included in the harm reduction plan.

Session Ten:

Description: The objectives of this session include having the participants review their loved one’s harm reduction targets, as well as receive information on how to plan for harm reduction. Participants will be able to create of a harm reduction plan and receive an example of a harm reduction contract for reference.
